Sweetgrass Baskets
Sweetgrass baskets were first made by African slaves in the lowcountry in the 1800s for both household and agricultural use. Baskets were made of sweetgrass, pine straw, and bull rush, all natural materials indigenous to the lowcountry. This ancient African art has been handed down from generation to generation, and today this tradition survives only in Charleston, SC.
